What Are Luck Pillars (Da Yun)?

If the natal chart describes the instrument, Luck Pillars describe the piece of music being played. Same instrument, different movements.

What they are

Da Yun (大运, "great luck" or "major cycle") is a sequence of ten-year periods. Each has a stem-branch pair, just like a pillar in the natal chart. The sequence starts at a calculated age — usually between one and ten — and continues for roughly eight to ten periods, covering a lifetime.

Each ten-year period is then divided into ten annual pillars (liu nian, 流年), one per year.

How the sequence is built

Two rules govern it:

That last calculation is why two people born a day apart can start their Luck Pillars at noticeably different ages — the distance to the solar term boundary is what counts, not the calendar date.

How they are read

A Luck Pillar is not a fortune cookie. It is a change in the chart's balance, and the reading depends entirely on what it changes.

Ask three questions for each pillar:

  1. What element does it bring in? The stem and branch each carry an element.
  2. Is that element helpful or unhelpful for this specific Day Master? A chart that needs Water reads a Water pillar differently from one already drowning in it.
  3. What does it interact with? A pillar whose branch clashes the day branch touches private life; one that combines with the month branch touches career and public role.

A worked contrast

Take two people with the same Day Master, a Water type that is strong in its natal chart. Strong Water is usually helped by Wood (outlet) and Fire (what it can act on).

Same natal chart type, opposite timing. This is why Luck Pillars cannot be read without the natal chart, and why "good luck" is not a universal label.

Annual pillars inside the decade

Within a decade, each year adds another layer. Practitioners usually look for the year where the annual pillar echoes or clashes with the decade's theme.

A year that repeats a branch already present in the chart can amplify an existing pattern — sometimes usefully, sometimes not. A year that fills a gap can be quietly significant.

This is also where most over-reading happens. An annual pillar describes a theme, not an event. "This year touches your wealth star" is not "you will get rich this year."

What Luck Pillars are not

They are not predictions with dates. They are not a countdown to good or bad times. And they are not deterministic — the same pillar that reads as pressure for one person reads as promotion for another, because what counts is the chart it lands on and what that person does with the period.

Every chart on this site lists the first eight Luck Pillars with their starting ages, so you can see the sequence that applies to you.
